
The weekly battle for the “Most Played Game on Xbox Live” continues this week with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare still holding the #1 spot for 4 weeks straight and managing to keep Halo 3 from retaking the throne. I had a chance to talk with quite a few of the Bungie guys at GDC this past week, mostly at the Microsoft party, and I could tell that neither one of us were going to slip off the top of the charts without a fight.
With the release of our Feature patch and DLC coming closer and closer every day, and plenty of new playlist ideas being thrown around for Call of Duty 4 multiplayer I know we can keep the fight going for a long long time. I love these weekly number checks because it provides a great opportunity to give you guys a weekly update on how things are going here at the studio with those updates, so with that said…
I got word that the Xbox 360 Feature patch could be ‘very very close’, I can’t tell you exactly when because they haven’t passed on that information but apparently certification went fantastic and I was given the Green light to take care of some things that I have to do before it goes live to you guys, which means good things. I’m not going to get any hopes up, but I hope to be seeing some new Kill Cams by the weekend if we’re lucky. Don’t hold me to that though, but I have a good feeling about it.
The Ps3 Feature Patch has officially made it’s way off to Sony and has been going through the certification process, this one should be a rather quick turnaround hopefully so I’m not expecting too much delay on this at all. I will keep you updated as much as I can on it’s progress.

As for DLC, their coming along great. We have a DLC Play test at 5:30 today which is essentially where we all jump in and play games on the new maps. QA plays with us so they test for bugs and glitches, while we play more for the design aspect. For example one of our guys found this killer sniping spot on one of the new maps which is really open where you could basically see around the entire map if on a certain rooftop, so we’re going to jump in there and see if we feel it’s too overpowered or just a really sweet sniper spot. To be fair, the map he found it on is a huge map ripe for snipers anyway, so it may not be that big a deal as there’s plenty of ground coverage and alternate ‘covered’ paths to take.
During this DLC test we’re going to be recording some video of one of the maps for SpikeTV / GameTrailers that I did an interview with last week talking about this specific map. It’s a bit further along with the rests and is a special treat to some of our “loyal” Call of Duty players that I know a lot of you are going to love, especially you Sgt. Payback.
I also have to take three screenshots of the new maps for later on when we start doing promotion, so I have to start scouting out some good angles in the maps to take shots of. We typically like to get a key map landmark in each screenshot on loading screens as you could probably tell that really identifies it as THAT MAP. Which is what I mean by good angle, for example, when you see Bloc, you know it’s bloc because of the statue in the middle and ferris wheel, or Crash because of the Helicopter, and so on and so forth.
Other than that we’re looking at new playlists ideas, possible new gametypes, rulesets, things we can do separate from new DLC that we’re already working on that will keep the game fresh and new for players. Those will probably start showing up a little after the feature patch hits. So if you have ideas for cool playlists keep sending them in for consideration as that’s something we can constantly change, add, take away, etc at any time. I think I already have my favorite that we’ll try out first…

Four weeks in a row!! Just shows how good a game it really is. Not that Halo is bad though, even though I haven’t played it since Oct. Also COD4 is the only game I’ve had in my XBOX since I got it in Dec.

I def. agree that Team Survival is one of my favorite ideas so far, and @ Jonathan testing out Merc and Hardcore versions of other playlists is always good in my mind. CTF is something we’re constantly going back and forth on.

Hello, I posted this in the IW forums already, but felt it might be overlooked. I would like to see a hostage mode like in Counterstrike.
Call it “Search and Rescue” or something like that.
-Each hostage is worth +100 points. Killing a hostage gives you -100 points.
-Saving all hostages by yourself gives you a bonus +50 or +100.
-Number of hostages can be decided by popular vote or something. Or 4 hostages default is good too.
-Regular kills are +50 like in Search and Destroy.
-Assists are +25 as well.
Basically search and destroy but altered for hostages.
Of course the amount of points you get can be changed to whatever value that seems ideal to IW. It would be a lot of fun in my opinion. Sorry for the lost comment and thank you for listening to players.

I’m happy to hear the 360 patch might be released this weekend. I have the PC version as well, but I still play the 360 version a LOT more because of all the cheaters on the PC… Ridiculous. That, and I like Prestige Mode.

I don’t play anything but Hardcore these days as it feels more… immersive. Also bullets really do kill in Hardcore as opposed to just scratching peeps…

It would be cool to see a Hostage rescue with NPC’s as hostages. One team holds the hostages and the other is trying to rescue them, you’ll lose points if you kill hostages. There is only one life per round.

Hey 402. I’ve said this before, and I stick to it; Hardcore tactical would be awesome. There are a lot of us who love hardcore mode, because it is the best, and sometimes we don’t have 6 people on and would like to play tactical, while daydreaming about playing hardcore. They’re both good playlists, and their should be a hardcore Tac.
Also, on a side note, you must hear this a lot, and it must get annoying, but you guys gotta bring that eotech into the multiplayer. That scope is extremely badass because it actually plays a role with nightvision, as well. Definitely a plus.
And with the community asking for night maps, and you guys addressing the community’s wants (which is really awesome in a dev team), I can’t see a better reason to put the eotech in with its features.

402, thanks for keeping us posted. Hey, one thing I have been meaning to mention is that some of the gametypes don’t match the maps. I am sure there are people here who are better aware of these mismatches, but one I can tell you about is Domination on Bog. The team that spawns near A is at a HUGE advantage, and really has to blow it to not win. Anyway, I just thought it should be mentioned, not only playlists, but also map/gametype match ups need tweaking. Cheers,

Personally I`d like to see some more FFA like game types. It seems a shame when an odd number of people log on from our clan that FFA is the only balanced thing to play.
Something where everybody is working alone but killing isn`t the main objective.
Have an assassination mode. One player is the target and other players get points for killing him. No points for killing anybody else. The person who does the kill becomes the next target. It works as well with odd numbers of players as with evens.

I would like to see a Team Doubles based gametype… like the halo version but with more than just a couple of teams.
There could be a total of 6 pairs making a total of 12 players in the game, and its a teamdeath match situation.
I think this gametype would be very fun, and tactical.
I know spawn killing maybe an issue but with the added spawn points that will be available in the forthcoming patch, this would hopefully resolve it.
Points would be the same as a normal team deathmatch but there is a spawn time limit… making sure the game isnt too hectic.

Something I would like to see added which as far as Im aware no one has mentioned yet is this..
If you select OVERKILL your second primary weapon has no camo… so you cant for example have a golden shotty… is there a reason you cant have camo on a second primary weapon?..
By the way, keep up the good work.. COD4 rocks and is the benchmark for all future FPS’s, no doubt will stay at number one spot until november when GOW2 is released, even then i will never part with this game!

Maybe its too big a change to do but is it possible to have multiple lobbies? for example, when you fire up the game and go into the Xbox Live option it would be nice to have a list of lobbies to select to search for your games so you can ensure you are playing people in your own country.. if you are in the UK and select UK gamers to play then chances are the LAG will be less and games more enjoyable… also, you can select lucky dip which is how it seems by default at the moment

Battle Royale mode,
players all start at a random position with a random weapon (no weapon duplicated, ranging from pistol to LMG) at regular intervals areas of the map will be hit with an airstrike to drive out campers. Last Man Standing wins, bonus for the amount of time you survive and what position you finish.

I’ve posted this idea on the CharlieOscarDelta forums: A Game of the (Week) gametype on the playlist that can be changed (weekly, bi-weekly, etc). This would help keep playlists fresh, while allowing people to play all of the cool gametypes that the Devs and the Users come up with.
And the short duration of the list could help prevent people from stat whoring the gametype for too long, if that turns out to be possible.

I can’t get enough of the Hardcore Team Deathmatch. One thing bothers me. I think last stand should be eliminated from all hardcore modes. I though hardcore was a more realistic mode where one shot should kill you. Let me know what you guys think.

Hey Rob, great information, again I just wanted to say thanks for you and the team trying to support the community by giving us information asap. Just thought it would be kinda cool to look into the idea of maybe a
- Jungle Map
- Hilly, mountain, foresty terrain.
- More Open Desert Maps with Sand Dunes and or little Oasis’s here and there.
- A Snow Map taking place on a Mountain on team tries to work down the mountain while the other team works their way up the mountain to try to gain access to a command post base of some type and all along the way there are little guard shacks and road blocks.
- Adding some M139 Mini-guns like in the single player to multiplayer?
- Multiple add-ons and attachments to weapons.
- Make more use of NV goggles, you guys made on of the greatest NV settings in a game to date, use them and be proud of them.
- Office Buildings/Complex’s
- Get rid of sticky aim. (some like it, others don’t, atleast make it an option the player can switch on or off. presents more of a challenge.)
- Bring leafy gun camo from single player into multiplayer.
- CTF is a must playlist the community wants to see.

I would love to see an online COOP mode were a buddy and i could go and complete objectives. I think COD4 could give Army of two a run for its money. Just being able to run through the game online with a buddy would fun!

No HATE here, all LOVE. COD4 is currently untouchable and I’m a fan of the work you have done, but , and here it comes…
Besides what is expected to be fixed in the soon to drop patch, I want to throw out some additional issues that you may or may not have heard of, unlikely but… I think they should be looked into.
1: A minimum 10 second delay should be added to M203, RPG & Grenades at start of match.
2: Team killers should be voted off by team or majority rule.
3: Jumps should be toned down, with guns becoming erratic if shot in mid jump.
4: Last Stand should not have such a long time frame of invulnerability from attack.
5: All play types should have hardcore modes.
6: Stabbings should be stopped at anything past an arm’s length, if shot.
7: The helicopter appears to have unrealistic AI in it’s actions of attacking & evading.
8: OpFor & Spetznaz have unbalanced camo.
P.s. What’s with all the CTF talk? I mean we have Sabotage which I think is better and more realistic.

I would like to see a 4v4 tactical game type. Same with the 3v3 games, where the games and maps rotate, just 4v4. Many o’ nights I’m in a party with 4 people, and we hate doing the 6v6 because we get 2 scrubs that either camp, or keep dying, giving the other team airstrikes and helecopters.
Also, a game type that’s 3v1, or 6v2, would be really cool. Team Death Match style, where the team that is 3 or 6, has a 7 second respawn, where the 1 or the 2 man team has no respawn time, and maybe has a constant radar.
Just some ideas.

Here is my suggestion for a new game type that my clan (OK Company) has been thinking about. I don’t know if the rules/settings for the different teams is possible. We think that this would be a pretty sweet game type though! Your thoughts?
Name: Remember The Alamo
Premise:
One team plays as the defenders and the other team plays as the attackers
Team Objectives:
The “Defenders” would spawn in a strong position on the map and their objective is to just survive until the time runs out. The “Attackers” objective is to wipe out the defenders before the time runs out.
Settings:
The time limit for this game type is 10 minutes. The “Defenders” have a 15-20 sec spawn start in order to fortify their position before the “Attackers” spawn.
The “Defenders” will only have a max of 3 respawns per player (they start out with all 3 when game begins) and a 200% health boost. For every 5 “Attackers” a “Defender” kills he gains 1 respawn up to the respawn max (kills do not need to be in a streak but go by total kills). (example: player has died twice and only has 1 respawn left but kills his fifth “Attacker”, so he gains an extra “life” bringing his respawn total back up to 2)Only the “Defenders” have access to the “UAV”, “Air Strike”, and “Helicopter” support.
The “Attackers” have infinate respawns with a 3 sec respawn timer, and only 75% health. The “Attackers” do not gain the “UAV, Airstrike”, or “Helicopter” ability for their kill streaks.

I would like to see a combination of sabotage and S&D. (No respawns w/30 sec bomb timer.) Each round team switches sides, and first to 4 points wins.
Put the bomb somewhere equally between the two spawns. Preferably in a building, because putting it out in the middle of open area is just dumb and deter players from attempting to pick it up . You need something that takes better advantage of some of the map areas. Maps like Ambush and Bloc have areas way back on each side that NEVER get used. A game type like this could really make use of some the maps, and become a great game type for competition.

Recon: One team seeks out intelligence items, the other team tries to defend the items. Several items to be captured…. (possibly even a situation for both sides to try and gather intelligence items?)
Escort: Hostage escort to a set marker, other team tries to eliminate and recapture hostage.
Breach: One team assaults, the other defends, a fortress or placement.
CTF: Please dont! Never liked it… too much of a typical match mode, doesnt fit the COD4 mentality, IMHO…. and is for those who cant plant the bomb, LOL.

Like everyone else said, a few playlist ideas would be CTF. I also like the Battle Royal (Last Man Standing) idea.
Assault similar to how Timesplitters did theirs. One team attacks certain key objectives while the other team defends. You could also have a variant where Defenders have 10 Lives and Attackers have 5 to make things seem more like an assault.
Hostage Rescue: One team rescues a hostage while the others try to kill him.
War Machines: Team is randomly chosen and is given Double Health and Fast Regen, the object is to wipe each other out. Similar to Search and Destroy and then you switch out. First to win 4 rounds wins.
Some more Camo Options. Snow Camo, Brick Camo, ect.

Most agree that Search & Destroy is the best, most competitive game type. The only problem is the spawn, bomb and target locations got old very fast. How about some new locations? To me, and I know a lot of others, it would be a HUGE update if the locations were just changed. Is it possible to make new spawn points, new bomb/target locations and have them randomly change? A little tweak like this would really make a huge difference and would make it feel like a fresh new map.
The same thing would be great for Sabotage too. Also, how about a hardcore Sabotage?
There definitely needs to be a Vote To Kick option to get rid of those team killers. Something needs to be done to solve that issue.
How about longer games? It seems the games just fly by too quick, especially Team Death Match, increase the games to 15-20 minutes or allow the players to vote on times. It sucks when your favorite map finally shows up in the rotation and then it you play it for what feels like a shorter time period than the lobby wait.
Or you can give players the ability to select the map. I know I could play overgrown all day long..I’m pretty sure others would too.

I agree 100% with Sgt Hoagie! make rpg’s with deep inpact hurt people behind light walls. fix it so not all of the gun is in camo-they don’t camo the mags and things like that. some russian scopes for guns. can we get at least 1 russian handgun and shotgun?

Team Killer voting system would be a loved necessity, for sure. But have seen it get abused as well in other games. But a miniscule problem compared to the team killers out there.
Maybe revamp the game’s built in feature as well (that fights against team killing already)… maybe tweak it so that a score of -30 (or -40) at any time during the match gets you booted automatically (no respawn delays etc). I mean this is obvious stuff going on… 3 strikes and you’re out sorta thing.

All these ideas are awesome, but i’d like to see some different military groups besides marines, sas and spetznaz.
Maybe a SEAL team or a different kind of SpecOP unit? Anything to add to the 4 existing player types would be awesome. This and/or character customization.
Oh and maybe something for doing all 10 prestiges or all the challenges?

A survival mode idea is absolutely great… where the last man standing is a winner and points double with each kill… call it a Royal Rumble with 12 players on the map… I would certainly play that… also make it multi-round so people who get killed first don’t just leave…. and finally, thank you sooooooo much for the hardcore S&D

How about a Sabotage varient where the Bomb (or intel) is not shown on the map (CTF right?) but instead of having it out in the open… hide it. Have a dozen or so random bomb (intel) spawn points per map instead smack dab in the middle.
and I like the idea of XP for shooting down a heli. Maybe a +50 xp and a +25 for assist points. That might encourage team mates to help out once in a while.

The weekly battle for the “Most Played Game on Xbox Live” continues this week with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare still holding the #1 spot for 4 weeks straight and managing to keep Halo 3 from retaking the throne. I had a chance to talk with quite a few of the Bungie guys at GDC this past week, mostly at the Microsoft party, and I could tell that neither one of us were going to slip off the top of the charts without a fight.

My whish list is basically all about adding more realism to the hardcore mode:
1. Make it possible to switch beteween single shot, burst and full auto for the guns that have this feature in real life.
2. Why the PSO-1 sight with its unique reticule isn’t in game already when using the SVD, beats me… Introduce it please!
3. Introduce a knife/bayonet attachment for the weapons that have this possibility in real life.
4. Improve hit detection. A shot by a 9mm round in the leg stops you from walking/running but not from crawling and firing back with your primary weapon. Same shot by a .50 or a 5.56 high velocity round kills you.
5. Introduce larger maps (rumour says this is coming with the DLC) where you cant return sniper fire with a pistol or MP5 and be rewarded with a headshot. The key is balancing the maps so that a sniper can’t camp an entire game and control large portions of the map (like one can today on Bog where it’s dead easy to survive an entire game if you spawn on the bridge side and you play with a team thats tactical). Larger maps toghether with new no-respawn game modes such as “Siege” (some sort of assault/defend type of game), maybe “Search and Rescue” and a “President-style” type, where you have to protect a NPC moving from A to B.
I think that the key to continued success is adding stuff that makes the game enjoyable for a larger crowd. Regardless of what my opinions of run’n'gunnin, spray’n'praying or camping are,different gamers like different things. Make a game that includes the whole scale: from a “jump-high-run-fast-survive-a-nuclear-blast” type to a “ultra-realistic-hardcore-press-button-to-speak” type depending on server settings…

FACT: The server you play on, knows what country your logged in from.
Wouldn’t it be cool to have uniforms depending on what country the majority of a team comes from? There are tons of cool camouflage out there. Most countries have both desert and woodland camo (even little, neutral Sweden where I come from have troops in Afghanistan) so in-game location wouldnt be a problem.
Taking this a step further would be having weapons depending on what country your’re from…

Here’s an idea…I dont know how everyone else feels about this but I can’t help but think that the helicopters make the game quite unfair for the opposing team. I know that its a reward for playing well, and its cool when you get one yourself, but trying to take one down is a pain…everyone starts running around looking upwards, shooting at a helicopter with an smg (effective :|)….I think that it would be a good idea to include some kind of counter-helicopter strike, available to the opposing team if a player gets say 5 or 7 kills - and they can choose whether use this as a traditional airstrike/heli, or use it to take down the enemy helicopter…then the players have to think more carefully about when to use their helicopters, introducing more risk to the whole thing…

I don’t understand what all the fuzz about campers are. A good team that plays tactical and communicates can deal with both run’n'gunners and campers. Me personally hate random-grenade-at-game-start players but I have learnt to deal with them. Different gaming styles are part of what I like about online military shooters. Every tactic has a countermeasure…

@Neoncypher: I thought about that too and I think its a brilliant idea. How about making it possible to call in a friendly chopper while a enemy chopper is in the air? With some coding from IW the airborne choppers would have to make shooting enemy choppers down a priority over hunting down ground troops…

The idea-juices are flowing now…any chance you IW guys can sort out the host thing..whenever the host of the game drops out/loses connection whatever, the game ends - people shout/cry/sigh…bad times….It would be great if when this happens, another host is chosen and the game continues

i’d like a “handguns only” gametype
that would be cool, but i wouldn’t want game hosts to be able to block out weapons (at least not for ranked games) because it makes game get lame with no grenades …that was the worst part of R6V, every game would have grenades locked, lame. also i wouldn’t want the players to be able to vote other players out because that gets abused a lot and gets annoying.

Assassination: One guy is the assassin (has eavesdrop and move silently turned on, no weapons other than a knife and silenced pistol) the others (radar off) have to kill him before the assassin kills all of them (would be fun on a nighttime map). Also, make everyone look the same so you’d be paranoid about who the assassin was….

I’m thinking, after reading your interview, that the first thing that should be considered and added asap is the addition of therandom target points in Search and Destroy. That should/would, as other’s have mentioned, make old maps fresh again and again compared to what we are beginning to feel are routines of the maps.

How about a 3 way Team Deathmatch? Ground war supports up to 18 players. Why not three separate teams of 6? It could get real interesting if you add the ability to form an “alliance” with another force, that automatically prevents you from killing them. Forming an alliance with the third team afterwards removes this restriction, and migrates it.

I know that alot of xBox 360 users may not agree with this, but there is a huge fan base on the PS3 that is just waiting for SOCOM, and this game is just a “holdover”. I’ve read many forums where fans have suggested the idea of A. Customizeable game types.(basically being able to host a lobby with your own preferences and users being able to join on their own) which I know is unlikely, just an idea. and B. An option to have a third person veiw as an option for each game, maybe up to the host, for example, when you search for a game, you can have the option on or off, so that players can use it if they want. I know either, or both, of those ideas would steal a large portion of the SOCOM fanbase.

It would be a 8-10 player game where theres a house with enemies in it and a hostage. The Marines or SWAT would have to secure the house and retrieve the hostage. No Grenades.

I don’t know if you ever read the comments to your posts since there appear to be no feedback in any of the threads, but anyway, here goes my attempt at constructive feedback for CoD4.
The game has got to be given better matchmaking ability. I’m not talking about pairing up players, I’m talking about being thrown into games already begun. Being placed into games with blowout scores, no time remaining, end score screen, etc is just lousy matchmaking. Also, getting put into a server where 1 dude - the host - has 4 bars, and the rest all have 1 to 2 bars? That’s ridiculous. Please tweak the matchmaking code to give us an accept yes/no option when being put into a game without being in the lobby first. It’s not that big of a request and it’s quite irritating to get put in games ongoing almost 75% of the time just because players leave, are getting blown out, or they hate the map so your game decides to “fill” the spots.
They are empty for a reason…. People either hate getting blown out, or they hate the map and it starts with less than max players. Don’t make the decision for us, let the players make the decision on whether or not we want to be in the game just like we have that chance in the lobby.

i think adding night and weather to some of the maps we already have would be great. ie; rain, fog, snow…..like the pc guys got with the christmas map.
also, i would really like to see you gain some xp for taking down a chopper, seems like a ton of people dont shoot at them. i feel like im the only guy out there shooting at them, to save my life and my teammates lives, but i get nothing in return. a +10 or +15 would be great!

It seems like there are plenty of good game mode ideas among the readers in here. However I doubt that all these great ideas will make it into the game. A solution to this might be to make the game setting customable. I used to play Ubisofts Ghost Recon back in the days and we often made up a game type for the evening, edited the server settings and played. Some types spread around the community and the player invented game type “President” eventually made in to the game…
Only “downside” to this is that no special XP is handed out when completing a mission. For me this isn’t a problem since I couldn’t care less about the icon next to my level since I only play to have fun…

I love hardcore, but hate those assholes that use an RPG to kill the entire team just as the game begins. There should be a voting system in place to boot those jerks or at least give the host control. COD4 is a good game, but it is taking way to long to get the patch out. I am honestly bored with the game at this point. I have found myself playing more and more Gears. The only thing that will get me back on COD4 full-time will be the release of the patch and the new map pack.

• More Brain matter
• Limbs can be shot off individually

• C-130 in multiplayer for kill streaks of 20+
• Add dogs to multiplayer
Finally, add multiple attachments to the weapons…What is the point of having a piccanty rail on my M4 if I can’t have more than one attachment? Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense that you can do it in SP but not MP. Also, whats up with the silenced sniper? You tease us with it in SP, but once again it doesn’t translate into MP.

I played this morning before work and already played with the patch. You can see in the killcam where the bomb came and hit you from an airstrike. And in one game the host left and all keep in the same party.. Can’t wait for the new maps…
