Call of Duty 4 Xbox 360 Patch is OUT - Here’s what’s changed!

February 29, 2008 · 203 Comments

Hey Everyone –

Just as I called it, the Xbox 360 patch for Call of Duty 4 passed certification by the weekend, and started hitting consoles near you this morning. For those of you wondering what’s been changed, a full list of the newness is:

New Kill Cams - Everything that can kill you has a Kill Cam now. Grenades, Airstrikes, Claymores, C4, M203 Rounds, RPGs, anything. So jump online, get owned alittle and check them out. They’re awesome, especially Grenades and M203 shots that go across the map and through a window.

Host Migration - Host migration was added, so now when the host leaves you won’t get dropped back to your own lobby by yourself. Everyone will stay together. Host Leaves, everyone returns to lobby, selects next best host, and the game starts up again. No more re-inviting, re-partying up because a host ended the game.

Improved Sniper Accuracy - The Sniper rifle accuracy has been improved. No more, WTF? shots now. Your cross hair will be a better representation of where your shot will ultimately land. Try out a sniper class today, let us know how the new accuracy feels.

Improved ACOG Scope Accuracy - ACOG scopes accuracy on any weapon has been improved. Test it out, throw it on one of your classes and give it a go.

Upgraded Spectator Cam - Now when you’re a spectator you have the option to follow in 3rd person or 1st person. As well as rotate 360 degrees around the player you’re watching. Next time you’re dead in Search and Destroy and just watching your team mates do stuff you know you can do better, now do it in 1st person or rotate around them.

Quick Mute Option - Now you can easily and quickly mute players in-game without ever going through the Xbox Live blades. Just go to their gamertag on screen and hit ‘A’ to quick mute via the in-game scoreboard if playing. Quick. Easy. Salvation!

In addition to these feature additions there will also be:

Improved Network Performance For Larger Games - 18 player games now require more bandwidth to host, resulting in smoother performance for players.

Optimized Server Selection for First Match - Server selection is now optimized to select best bandwidth servers associated by LSP.

Fixed “Playlist Older Than Host” Error - Player will no longer get this error when entering games.

Additional Start Spawn Locations in All Maps - Added a minimum of 9 extra start spawns on each side of all maps.

Jump online, test out the new kill cams and features, and as always let me know what you think. We’re also going to be playing around with new playlists in the near future so I’ll keep you updated on those changes as they come.

I didnt see a way to mute ppl in the pre game lobby, only during a game. Do you just hightlight the persons name an hit X in the lobby??

@Goon360: To Mute people in-game, go to the scoreboard and hit ‘A’ on their gamertag. In the lobby, go over to their gamertag and hit ‘A’ then select Toggle Mute.

    402-
Great news about the patch… looking forward to it for the PS3. Also saw an idea from COD4 website forums, from a guy named HCKYPLAYER8, and have been expanding upon his idea… didnt know if it might be possible for addition or fix for online gameplay :

Saw this in another thread and thought it was a funky idea that needed its own post. Not sure if its his idea but want to give him credit for it at least.
HCKYPLAYER8 mentioned in another post about having the ability to call in a Helicopter whenever the enemy calls one in… that could be used to counter the Helicopter. Some more thoughts on this:

    EX.
    OpFor calls in a Heli
    >SAS sees this and someone who has their 7 kills calls in a Heli

    >Opfor called theirs in first so it will be there first, and will be able to
do its rampage as usual… but the SAS Heli will arrive soon after
resulting in the two Heli’s battling it out above the ground battle

    >The Heli that wins would be able to continue its onslaught after
Both Heli’s would be able to be brought down from the ground as
usual, but would be battling it out in the sky with the enemy Heli primarily… be a counter strike ability.

    >Same could be possible for the airstrikes… in that instead of the 3 payload drops (3 planes striking) if the opponent were able to call theirs in right after, the strike may only be 1 plane (1 payload bombing) or 2..depending on when the counterstrike was called in. Would be less of a battle in the skies with the planes, but maybe more like a pursuit that makes them fly off and go away.

Know it needs some tweaking, but love to hear thoughts on this… as I found it a really interesting idea, and had alwyas hated not being able to call in an airstrike or Heli… just because the other team’s is already there. Might also be a balancing to the powerfully perfect AI of the helicopters.

Don’t know if anyone else has gotten this, just an FYI to IW.

While one can appreciate all the work that IW put into these changes I can say that I’m very disappointed in the Host Migration fix. I was under the impression if it would be more like the Halo feature where the game would choose a new host in game and allow us to continue playing that same match\round. I think you should clarify this in the documentation (and perhaps you have).

Love the new kill cams, looking forward to the new maps. Best wishes and continued success.

  • Wayne1337 // February 29, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Every game that I have played in I have had a red bar. Before the patch I mostly had 3 green bars. It takes way longer for me to find a game now, it used to only take a few seconds. I hope in the next patch all the maps will be available when playing in split screen.

  • Zen 71 // February 29, 2008 at 10:21 pm

I have not seen this addressed anywhere so I thought I would ask. Does this patch fix the Win Streak column on the Barracks-Leaderboards-Wins board? The beta kept track of how many wins you had gotten in a row, but the retail game has never been able to keep track of more than 1 or 2 (I have seen some players with a 2 win streak but mostly they all say 1).

Not that this is a big deal, I was just curious if this issue was addressed in this patch or if IW was even aware of the issue (I mean, really, how many IW employees really care about the leaderboards, right?)

Thanks again. Please continue supporting this great game. I can see playing it for a couple of years if additional maps and game types are added every 2 - 3 months. So please, don’t rest on your laurels, continue giving us more maps because this game is the best FPS to date. I can’t see any game beating you out any time soon.

The new spectator kill cams are gonna be used to cheat and ruin Search & Destroy. Just sayin…

  • Johnny Neat // February 29, 2008 at 11:05 pm

Upgraded Spectator Cam ISSUE - The issue is on it being allowed for ranked matches due to the 3rd person view being used by cheaters who’ll private chat or call their teammates up on the location of the enemy. I think it’s cool, don;t get me wrong, but that alone should have axed it from ranked matches. Private matches are a solid. It’s a sad world we live in.

Why do consolers have to pay for map packs?

  • dohpaz42 // March 1, 2008 at 12:51 am

Not sure if you read these, but I have two more suggestions to add for a future patch, that I think will further enhance the already great gameplay:

    1. Add a new button in the pre-game lobby for a quick mute (i.e., highlight the offending gamer’s GT and press X); in game mute is awesome, and a pre-game mute that doesn’t require using the blades — if possible — would be best.
    2. If possible, have a “point of no return” for when you Find Match that won’t make you join a game that has reached a certain time limit left (i.e., less than 2 minutes left). Nothing worse than joining a game and not being able to play, just to go back to the lobby right after.

So far the patch seems really nice. I actually got a headshot with my cross hairs on the person’s head. THAT was some exciting stuff. :)

  • zoompooky // March 1, 2008 at 1:40 am

    re: Increased ACOG Accuracy -

If your aim was to increase accuracy of the ACOG, why is the sway still there? As it stands, I’m WAY more accurate with the red dot than the ACOG simply because of all the sway. As it stands, the ACOG has the following advantages:

    - Slightly more zoom

    And the following disadvantages:

    - Scope sways making targets harder to hit.
    - Animation is much slower from scoped to hip fire.

In short - the hardest scope in the game to get is a step down from using the red dot… it’s actually a hinderance to use it.

  • Crossy // March 1, 2008 at 1:43 am

First off i have got to say the game is one if not the best game i have ever played. Now the bad part lol. Im a UK gamer and i run a UK gaming clan for me the patch has fixed numerous things bar the most important one, Latency. There is at least 6-9 of us every night who play, virtually everyone is on 10-24mb upload and 1.5 - 2.5mb upload the pings are great yet nearlly every game we get put in with someone who has a great connection for him and the rest of the room has to deal with woefull latency so we just back out. On the odd occasion we get host i would say 2/3 - 4 of the room has 4 bars the rest have 3. The diffrence between having a decent connection in-game to having a naff one is ridiculous. Its equvilant to a boxing match and one fighter having his arm tied behind his back, it just makes the game so un-balanced. There is nothing more frustrating that shooting the crap out of someone at close range with a p90 for them to have the time to turn around and finish you with a few burst of a weaker weapon. I had my fingers crossed the patch would address this issues only to be let down.

Like the host migration feature. Saves more time for playing.

I am very, very disappointed with the host migration. This doesn’t solve any problems at all. The fact that it was this that delayed this patch so much further upsets me.

This new host migration was not at all what we were led to believe it was. So their solution to this is to just start a new game? Whatever, Infinity Ward. You might as well put a band aid on a tumor.

Your host migration didn’t solve anything because the game still ends. I couldn’t give a rat’s ass that the lobby stays together. Who cares? I could care less about staying together with a bunch of people I don’t know. The party would never break up when this happened before. So why was so much time wasted on this worthless “solution”?

I love Call of Duty 4 and it’s the best multiplayer game available on a console service. But this crap host migration was a big waste of everyone’s time.

Call me when it’ll actually switch hosts mid-game and not cause the game to end. Until then, it’s not acceptable.

  • pic // March 1, 2008 at 7:08 am

….you just officially ruined this wonderful game…. umm you guys completely lied to everyone about the host migration. i think its funny how every other game can have the host changed in a game but you failed to do that… we dont want to get dropped out of the game if the stupid host quits.. we want to stay in it and play… god….you guys are horrible.

I also have to express my disappointment over this patch. It was supposed to be out 2 months ago and was already overdue at that point.

I just can’t believe it took 4 months to make a patch that just keeps everyone in the room together when the host leaves. WTF? That isn’t host migration!

If games are still going to end before they even start and are going to continue to be terminated in the middle of a good match, then who cares whether it dumps you back into the lobby with the same people? Once the match is ended you might as well just search for a new one anyway. This doesn’t solve anything.

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter though, because even if the patch did what it was supposed to, I’m not going to be playing the game once Rainbow Six Vegas 2 comes out anyway. I was just hoping during these last couple weeks for the game to be what it could have been to begin with.

I am glad the “Playlist data is older than the hosts” error has finally been fixed though.

  • Jesse // March 1, 2008 at 10:47 am

This is bullcrap!!!!!!!!!!Why couldnt IW do what cod3 did with the host bull crap. when the host left mid game it didnt end the game it just gave host to the best connection. this ending the game is worthless garbage. I would think that with the amount of people playing this game and the amout of money customers paid for this game, IW would have taken this issue more seriously. This is just like the crap with cod2. Buy the game and wait for stuff to be fixed months after months after realease. This crap shouldnt even be realeased without features like that. This is the damn 4th COD game not the 1st. I am very disapointed in this patch and the poor poor attempt to shut loyal customers and fans up.

I guess this will just get passed over and left alone just like past problems.

    Thanks for your time !!!!!!

Wow ever since the patch came out I have wanted to break this game in half. the acog scope is still weaker then bill gates grandpa’s knees. I have been getting owned by noobs everyone swears the Mp5 is stronger. I have played this game for 27 days online and you idiots do this to me? Mabey a bunch of noobs told you what was wrong with this game because u have completely failed. Also if the host leaves it still ends the game. Does it still count as a loss? How many signatures do I need to get rid of this patch? 94% of people i have talked to that paly this game on the regular don’t like it. p.s. the message of the day should be updated more. I didnt even know about the patch untill all of my friends got it and I couldnt play with them. Thanks for nothing.

  • mrhugo // March 1, 2008 at 11:41 am

    Hey Fourzerotwo,

the patch has seriously slowed connection times in Europe =(.

I’m in switzerland, and prior to the patch I could connect and find a match in any mode almost instantly…the match would start about 15-20 sec. later.

Now I’m waiting 5 - 10 minutes to find matches!!

I have not changed anything in my setup and also tried resetting my router as some people suggested, but the performance drop is definitely there.

I don’t know if something was changed with the way the servers are found or which ones are used, but IT’S SERIOUSLY SLOW NOW. Please have a look into this and let us know what’s the status.

    Thanks!

    @ WQLF

I totally agree mate. I am from the UK and 99% of the time me and everyone in my lobby end up in a game hosted by an American. Its frustrating to join a game where maybe 2-3 people have got a decent connection knowing full well if one of us were hosting the game would alot better for everyone. All our connections are decent as we play alot of clan matched we all switched to the best provider in the UK which has the best download and upload speeds with great pings this was to avoid lag. Even with a great ISP we rarely get host. I said it earlier the game is brilliant when it works sadly for anyone outside the USA that does not happen often. Even more frustating is the issue never gets addressed in the form of a reply/comment from a IW staff member.

I’m not willing to waste 10mins. waiting everytime I want to play just to find a match!! Seriously, do you test anything outside the US??!

Patches normally fix things not make them worse (and yes, it matters when it affects the audience outside the US IW! we usually pay more for the same game then US consumers). If you value your audience, please fix this ASAP.

Patch was a move in the right direction. Nice new features… Mute is only a half baked idea. Why not be able to mute the other team for more than one map. Why did you make it that you have to re-mute every time you change maps?
Also getting a lot more LAG. Could have been Xbox LIVE too, though, not sure.

Other than that, I really like the additions in the patch… Mute just isn’t as good as I’d hoped.

  • Mark // March 1, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Hey are the new kill cams gonna be released for people who have the PC version of the game?

  • Evil Crouton // March 1, 2008 at 5:46 pm

Any chance of getting rid of the host migration? The new cams and scopes are awesome. However the host system seems broken. The initial host selection is horribly flawed and the host migration is universally thought of as pointless. I’d rather have to hit the find game button and know who was hosting and be able to actually play than the crapshoot it is now.

  • Thumpthi // March 1, 2008 at 7:32 pm

I love it,host migration would be better if you could set it up like that as you continue the game and not rebooted back to the lobby to play another map.But at least I get to keep my team players.Good job though, now waiting for the maps

  • xCoNx Fascism // March 1, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Overall a decent patch, but a little disappointing.

Snipers + ACOG = Perfect. Thank You.

Spawn Locations = Eh. Mixes it up a bit, but personally, I don’t like being spawned in a corner facing the wall

Spectator Cams = Alright. 1st person view is a great idea and I really enjoy it. The 360 degreee rotation for 3rd person is stupid though. 1. It is hard to control, because if a person turns, the camera will still turn. It should have a follow player/not follow player option. 2. Another easy way to cheat! Boo!

Host Migration and Other Connection Fixes = Worthless. Whats the point? Previously, if the leader of my party was the host, at least I’d take me with if he backed out. If it causes problems for those not in North America, get rid of it. I didn’t find it too big of a problem in the first place. If you fixed it correctly, aka Halo 3 (a game I don’t like), it’d be acceptable. I never had a problem with lag before. GET RID OF THIS.

Quick Mute = Decent. The in-game mute is nice, but that option does not appear in the lobby for me. Re-muting the same players every map is not very fun.

Kill Cams = Fun. Either another thing to get pissed about (see how random a grenade actually is) or something to laugh about. If only we had a way to save and view our games (without buying a capture card)…

I liked the 2 helicopters idea proposed at the top of the comments, but not so much the airstrikes.
I want to see DLC previews and a release date, as well as new playlists.

I think the patch has made the game worse and I was anticipating it a lot. It feels more laggy and I have trouble playing full 6 on 6 matches in headquarters, that never used to happen before.

  • Biker // March 1, 2008 at 9:01 pm

I’ve been a fan of IW since their release of COD2, but this patch reminds of of how unplayable COD2 was BEFORE it’s patches.

In the case of COD4, it was great right out of the box on release day. There were a few improvements I wanted to see, and most of them were supposed to be addressed in this patch. They weren’t!

As previously mentioned the host migration is useless. People that have played either Halo, or COD3 (didn’t like either) have come to expect a seemless host migration. Jumping out of, what could be a great game, absolutely sucks!

I now get numerous errors when attempting to start a game

The 6 v 6 matches take forever to fill. I understand that this may be fixed after a few days and will see what transpires.

The mute button is non-existent for me in lobby. This is where I would need it the most since I tend to play in a party with others I know.

The additional kill cams are the only thing I’ve enjoyed, but that will lose it’s luster after only a short time.

Right now I wish that IW would “undo” the patch until the bugs are worked out of it. After attempting to play last night, I am ready to put COD4 on the shelf for a while until the kinks are worked out.

  • Blackdog GT // March 1, 2008 at 9:29 pm

So everyone is having the problem with lobby mute? I can’t find it. I have to go to their gamercard to mute, which hasn’t changed. It’s easy to perform in game, but the lobby is where I want the other team muted. Any input, IW?

  • PICO de G4LLO // March 1, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Blackdog, I think that the quick mute only works in the game.

  • Blackdog GT // March 1, 2008 at 9:59 pm

PICO, fourzerotwo claims that by hitting “A” the quickmute option will pop up in the “View Gamercard/Kick” window. But it’s not. Muting the other team while in game is all well and good, but the muting doesn’t transfer back to the lobby. What happened??

  • Stang 98k // March 1, 2008 at 10:27 pm

Yep, the Mute functionality is nonexistent. The steps in the lobby of “hit ‘A’, choose mute” don’t exist.

    Lobbies NEVER fill.

Very disappointed in this “patch” - which was supposed to fix things but only made things much worse.

  • Blackdog GT // March 1, 2008 at 10:41 pm

I don’t have any problem with connectivity or speed, personally. So it must not be a universal issue.

….. but the muting. The muting in-lobby needs a fix. PLEASE.

  • TheoneandonlyLordSdmzr // March 1, 2008 at 11:53 pm

now if only they’ll fix the overly competent “red dot” sight. I mean come on, guys hitting you with an uzi from across the entire map cause the dot is on you? Limit the distance per gun…. please. Why pick a rifle or sniper if the red dot is instant death? Make good use of the repsective guns and thier ranges.

  • kman3k // March 2, 2008 at 2:42 am

Thank God the patch is here!
Thank you soo much IW. And thanks for keeping us “in the loop” 402!

I still think that Team Tactical should be upped to be 4v4 max. Would really add a more realistic mode of how this game is played competitively, i.e. MLG.

Or just add a new playlist called “Competitive Play” or whatever, but have it be 4v4 w/ all game types (tdm, hq, dom, & sabo at least).
I think that addition alone would keep CoD4 at the top of Xbox Live when new games (RB6V2, etc.) come out.

  • Bulletmunchr // March 2, 2008 at 3:13 am

The spawns are a tid bit messed up… I play hardcore and all, but I have enemies spawning literally behind me all day.

The network connection to server host isn’t pretty either, I’m always going into rooms and being laggy, even if I’m host (I have a 9 meg upload).

Other than that, the patch is great and is working superb.

How come no one from IW have been on since the disastrous patch release? It basically has stuffed the game for NON US countries as it goes on ping not connection as I have 30,000/1200 cable and use to host every game with my aussie pals now all it takes is one yank to ruin our game as he gets host!! because of his lower PING, if this isnt rectified soon I plus a lot of people will be trading my new paper weight in for a new title….

I like everything in the patch but the new spawn system. I’m sick of respawning looking at a wall or looking at the sky. Now it seem the respawn system wants to respawn the enemy all around me, when I’m by myself or respawn me in front of the guy who just killed me. IW just make a new patch to put the respawn system back the way it was before this patch.

  • zoompooky // March 2, 2008 at 4:35 pm

    @Mr. Enigma:
“This new host migration was not at all what we were led to believe it was.”

    @pic:
“you guys completely lied to everyone about the host migration.”

Both wrong. They’ve said all along that the game would end, a new host would be selected, and the game would restart. Maybe it’s not what you EXPECTED, but if you read the official news from the official sources you would have known what to expect.

    @DaKine One:

Uh, a whole 27 days and you’re complaining about ‘noobs’ ? Get a grip.

    @zoompooky:

    Well said!

  • Dave // March 2, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Match-types that aren’t team deathmatch take forever to fill up. I’ve also been noticing a LOT of connection issues now where matches just start lagging and players start skipping all over the place with the “Connection Problem” icon popping up and where shots just aren’t connecting, even on snipers who’re completely oblivious to me behind them. Haven’t ever had it before; I’m on a 75Mbps university line, so I doubt it’s a problem on my end. And personally, I really hate getting killed by random grenades/grenade launchers at the beginning of a match, especially in S&D where you don’t respawn. It just really cheapens the experience. Could you maybe have like a 10 second No Grenade period at the beginning of matches? Nonetheless, this is still the top online game for me. Just went through single-player again and I cannot give you guys enough praise for an awesome job!

I like some of the things that the patch brang like the sniper accuracy and the killcams and im in the US so im not having a lot of the problems that some other people are having so to me the patch is great. but i do think that it really needs to be fixed because people in the US are not the only ones that play this game. take the patch off fix it and put it back out. oh and also the host migration is not nearly as good as it could have been.

  • row1 // March 3, 2008 at 2:16 am

‘Optimized Server Selection for First Match’ this doesn’t work very well at all. Like posted above I am from outside of the USA (New Zealand). In the weekend it took me 30+ minutes to find a game as it kept putting me in game with Americans, which results in me having a red ping and makes it unplayable. The match making should be finding me hosts in Australia, New Zealand or other locations where I get a green ping.

    few comments about the update.

-Host migration is never really fixed until it supports in-game migration (aka game goes on without dropping everyone back to the lobby)
-While in a party, playing a match, host left and everyone got dropped back to the lobby. When new game started, friend in my party actually went to the opposing team - bug
-Can’t do the quick ‘mute’ in the game lobby
-Muting during a game using back button then A is only for that game. In lobby, the player is “unmuted” again.

  • Westy 65 // March 3, 2008 at 8:49 am

IW, thanks for a great game! The update is an improvement but…

We still have major lag issues (in Australia). It is driving me to the brink. I have started going back to GRAW2 because I am getting so frustrated with the lag issues. When the game was ‘new’ (I started playing just before Christmas) I put it down to the problems with XBOX Live in general but it has been over 2 months! I love this game but the lag is ‘KILLING’ me!

This new ‘fix’ has just made things worse for us Aussies. Last night, while in a party with 3 of my clan members, we waited for about 15 -20 mins to get into a game…. at one point…. only to get the dreaded “one bar” connection and to leave in disgust because it was impossible to hit anything.

The only times I get a good game is when I manage to get host (or one of my Aussie friends does). It only takes one American to join the game and (as soon as there is a minor bandwidth issue) the game tends to ‘prefer’ him…. so it wrecks the game for the rest of us. We get a one bar connection AND have to put up with heaps of abuse because suddenly we all look like nubes… (because we have major lag).

Please, Please Please…. make it possible for us to ‘filter’ on location or to just cut out US based servers altogether. I have NEVER been able to play a lag free game on a US based server: I have played online for over 9 days! That’s 220+ hours!

Please listen to your Aussie fans!
