Gamespot.com’s Brad Shoemaker stopped by the studio last week to check out the new DLC we’ve been working on and posted up his impressions today along with some of the first screenshots to ever go public from the new maps. There will officially be four new maps in the map pack, and Brad goes over two of them in depth, including the new map Broadcast and Creek.
The second map we played is entirely new, and it’s named Creek. But there’s a lot more to it than a simple babbling brook. This is a very large-scale outdoor map with a small cluster of houses on one side of it. In the middle, there’s a huge ravine circling the perimeter with multiple levels of pathways up its side. Down below, the trail leads along the eponymous creek bed to a waterfall. Elsewhere along the base of the ravine, there’s a lengthy and winding cave that cuts underneath the hill then out to the other side. As big as it is, there are a lot of places to go on this map; from prone sniping atop the cliff face to hiding out behind a rock in the tunnel, you never know where an opponent will be attacking you.
For the full article with full details on both maps, as well as some tidbits on the remaining two maps in the map pack (Killhouse and Chinatown), and two of the first screenshots from the new maps, be sure to read the article over at Gamespot.com right now:
Call of Duty 4 DLC Map Pack Hands On
Also, Spike TV will be airing a special episode of GametrailersTV this Friday at 1 AM that will have the world exclusive unveiling of the third map in the upcoming Variety Map Pack for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. So be sure to check out that episode which will include exclusive gameplay footage from the map as well as an interview we did with them at GDC this year.

Creek looks and sounds like it is going to be awesome. Can’t wait to check out GT TV this weekend. Any updates on a more specific time frame other than “Spring”?
Bunsenbeaker27 // March 13, 2008 at 3:35 am
Creek looks exactly like what I was hoping for; large outdoor map, thanks. Based on the article it sounds like Broadcast is a bit bigger than the SP level. I’m hoping Chinatown is on the scale of Strike or larger. Killhouse sounds really tiny like shipment. I hope aside from Creek one of the others can accommodate large parties 16+. I was hoping to see two non-urban combat maps, but look forward to additional details on Chinatown and Killhouse. Any chance of bringing back Vossenack or another COD2 map?

MoonDevil // March 13, 2008 at 6:48 am
Looking good! But little disconcerting about this part:
“But interestingly, Infinity Ward hasn’t decided how the maps will be distributed on the PC, where players are much more expectant of postrelease bonus content being released for free.”
PC users can MAKE their own maps for free… if we have to pay for the new maps by IW, so should they!
El Hadji // March 13, 2008 at 6:53 am
Looks very promising! New maps and maybe 2nd patch(?) will keep me occupied for several more weeks! Cheers!

“But interestingly, Infinity Ward hasn’t decided how the maps will be distributed on the PC, where players are much more expectant of postrelease bonus content being released for free.”
Yes, it would be nice too have them for free, BUT I’ll have no problem with giving money for new content, because I’m a COD4 FAN 4 LIFE.
And I’m not the only one
Whatever // March 13, 2008 at 8:16 am
What happens to the people who don’t want to pay to download them? Will they be booted during the matchmaking process if the game goes on to a new map?
This is why I hate the new pay for maps concept. No matter how many people buy them there will still be a large part of the community that doesn’t, the player base then becomes fragmented. *sigh*

El Hadji // March 13, 2008 at 9:42 am
A question (thats probably been up before): Why doesn’t TK’ing minus scores affect the TK’ers team overall score?
Met a french clan of morons last nite and the all had Last Stand perk and TK’ed eachother almost every time we didn’t get headshots or grenade kill. EVERY team member had at least a minus score of -20 or -30. They lost the game anyway, but they finshed with a total score of +500. I consider this to be plain and simple cheating since I can’t imagine that this was IW’s idea of how to use the Last Stand perk. Am I wrong?
SAKY // March 13, 2008 at 11:03 am

deltaray // March 13, 2008 at 12:33 pm
It would be a wise descision to release them for free on PC as well, why?
Very easy - it gets people back to play and enjoy the game, who can’t see the current maps anymore + more people coming back means, more people again will get new to cod4 on PC.
It can only be a win situation for IW, even if the maps are free.
matt // March 13, 2008 at 12:39 pm
How about a release on the PS3 ahead/at the same time as the Xbox/PC for a change? We always seem to end up waiting weeks/months for the release after xbox/PC users have it.

Well that would be the case for ALL platforms. PC can make their own maps for free. If console has to pay then so should you… we all paid the same, or similar price for the game at start. Why should PC get things for free… definitely wouldnt be a “win win situation” for all.

don’t blame iw for ps3 not having patches, thats sony’s fault. They release the patch to 360 and ps3 same day. Sony just likes to fart around and see if they can think of a way to charge you for the patch and still have you think they aren’t ass ramming you.

FOURZEROTWO,
First off I would like to thank you for the update. CREEK looks awesome !!!! can’t wait to mow ppl down with my P90 on that map !!! But could you please please please please give us a more accurate timeframe of when the release date is for the DLC, I know that it was said , spring time and gamestop said months away. WTF !!!!!!!! the game did come out in november and Ive been playing it as much as time allowed, Ive finally made it to the 10th prestige and I’m reaching the limits of the game itself as far as online challenges. I have no problem paying for the new maps at all, Ive expected to pay for them from the getgo. Some of the maps(not all) are really starting to get boring as this is the problem with most of us that have been playing COD4 from the very beginning. I am a very loyal fan of the COD games, I have played them all. I think I can speak for most of the ppl in here when I say that we are going to freak out if we have to wait for spring, Also could you put a rest to the rumor of more prestige levels, True or not True ???? Please respond to this comment so I know you care (sniffle sniffle). Peace
Bill // March 13, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Also Ive heard rumors about the DLC comming out when RSV comes out, True or not True ??? I dont know how these rumors come out, but it pisses ya off when you hear something and then it doesnt come true. I can handle it now, Ive been to therapy…lol
Mr. Enigma // March 13, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Johnny Neat // March 13, 2008 at 4:18 pm
I’m not hating but MONTHS away?.. Late Spring? What the? Is this to be taken seriously?
Oh & the last PATCH brought & continues to allow some ISSUES. I’m sure you’re looking into it all but still wanted to add that, again, for your eyes.
P.s. Maps sound cool, but please make them not so one sided & make some more Urban war zone like areas please…
NOTE: Most hate Wetworks & Showdown overall due to maps always being voted against if optioned & adding more smaller maps do little to that issue. Too big sucks (COD3 proved that) & too Little Sucks (Wetworks & Showdown prove that).
Neil // March 13, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Please, maybe not in the immediate future, but within the coming months, add the ability to play with multiple people online through a single xbox console. It’s amazing that most other crappy games have this feature but COD4, the greatest shooter game EVER, doesn’t have this.
kevlar // March 13, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Maps look great, however price them at 1200 ms pts and while you may still sell quite a few due to the games popularity it will be less than half the ammount you would sell at 800 pts. 400 would be very nice but realistically that just aint going to happen. Here’s hoping.
BlueSpeed9 // March 13, 2008 at 5:18 pm
The first two maps look great. I’m quite pleased to see that the ‘leaks’ guessed Broadcast correctly; even in the campaign, this map looked amazing for some multi-player firefights. Still, I am really anxious to see what Chinatown looks like, that map is the one I hold out the most hope for — can we expect some great urban brawls with colorful neon backgrounds (Tokyo, anyone?)
As always, ignore the whiners, they’ll complain no matter how well you guys treat us.
GOON36O // March 13, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Very kool.
Tim Marman // March 13, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Let me be the latest to be very concerned about the “summer” and “months away” comments. I absolutely love COD4, and have put many, many hours in (as my gold cross attests to), but it’s seriously getting old. New modes, new maps are necessary.
I would have loved to get them near Vegas 2 comes out next week - I know a lot of people are going to go back anyway, but it would be nice to have a reason for some of that crowd to stick around.
Also, I’d love to hear more details on how you guys are going to handle the matchmaking with new maps. Obviously, those of us who buy them are going to want to play them as much as possible at first… will there be separate playlists for new maps only?
aaquib // March 13, 2008 at 6:26 pm

They’re not blowhards - they’re unhappy customers who, like a lot of people who bought COD4, are sick and tired of playing a terrible online that can be fixed with just a little bit of effort. These people have every right to be angry and have every right to complain to the 402. People like you only fan the flames and make things worse.

Hey, just an update on my status. I’ve been trying to get that final challenge (of all MP challenges) - Airborne. I have tried both glitch locations on bloc and crash, but they don’t work. I’m thinking they are only glitches for the PC/PS3 releases. I am thinking that you guys applied a fix for these glitches at some point, but I can’t tell. Anyway I’m just going to have to catch some Big Air, B.A. Baracus-Stylee . . .
Oh yeah - the maps! I haven’t seen much of them yet, but if they afford tactical play then I’ll applaud. Kind of changed my mind on the payment issue, though again, if you were to remove AIM ASSIST I wouldn’t mind.
Ed // March 14, 2008 at 5:37 pm
The new maps sound sweet but how often will we get to actualy play them, with the current map rotation/host migration, everytime someone quits out the game restarts a new line of maps. Often this means some maps get played over and over and others you hardly see at all.
I prefer to play ranked matches in Hardcore. I would hate to pay for the new maps, get all excited, and be online like 2 hours and maybe get to play 1 new map once and yet get vacant like 8 times. Dont want to pay for new maps I will hardly ever get to play.
If there was an option to choose what maps you would like to play in a ranked match right off that would make the game so much better, have you ever had a great match with another team on a map, and thought “ramatch!” lets do that again, but you cant because you are forced to another map and never know when you might get to play that one again.
And the horible spawns now, I will wait till that and the map rotation gets sorted out before I buy the new maps.
ensortidiaboli // March 14, 2008 at 5:51 pm
402 how long will IW support this game? its been stated that you guys are not doing COD:5 , are you guys planning on doing many map releases 2, 3? is there going to be any future intergration of weapons and character designs? new voice overs ? or is it a handful of maps and yall are moving on?
Sgt Payback // March 14, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Memo to Dave: Voicing your complaint is one thing, being a blow hard jackass about it is another. Seriously, if people despise COD4 that much then they need to sell it back to EB Games and move on. Just like I did with those piles of crap they call Rainbow Six Vegas and Call of Duty 3.

The COD2 map that Chinatown is based on is called Carentan, and it was a great choice by IW to bring it back. This one’s for you, 402!
Neilo // March 15, 2008 at 9:39 am
@ Shalashaska - If you notice, I posted on March 14, 2008 at 11:30 pm according to my view of the blog, which is in GMT as I live in England. I found the link on a CoD fansite forum, so I don’t know if it was an upload exploit link or an error by the webmaster, either way I did manage to see it before it was due.
Chinatown is a remake of a CoD2 match (they used far too much CoD2 footage to pad out the interview) and it looks more subtle than I had envisioned, but it still seems like a great new map. Very suburban, close quarters, should be a lot of fun!

just a quick question, do you think its fair that the loyal cod4 fans who already have the game and made it the most popular should have to pay 800 points, when a new player buying the game gets them for free? If the answer is that the new edition is more expensive then why does the box art say the new maps are ‘free’? wouldn’t it be a nicer gesture to give us the ‘token’ and make new buyers pay to download on marketplace? thanks for your time and thanks for a great game. also, many of my clan have gone off cod4 as they are so bored of the maps, the wait was just too long. we will be back but you’d keep online numbers up if the maps were more frequently released.
