Me and My PS3

April 23, 2008 · 265 Comments

As of recently, my love for my PS3 has been called into question when a blog post from over two years ago was pulled up from the watery grave of the internet and posted on Digg as well as the Playstation boards. For some reason, a post I make two years ago is news today… I guess, but I wanted to put it into context as the posting on Digg surely doesn’t.

Essentially the post was made over two years ago and was about the closing of the game site called Lik-sang.com due to some legal trouble with Sony. Yes, I criticized Sony about their handling of the situation two years ago and was frustrated with the PS3. I also stole a candy bar when I was nine.

Does that mean (I repeat, two years later) I still don’t like the PS3 or Sony? No. It doesn’t. In fact, I actually have a PS3 in my game room right now that I love and a large selection of Blu-ray movies. Not to mention I’m quite fond of plenty of PS3 games (CoD4 of course, I love Drake’s Fortune, Warhawk is fun as hell, and I can’t wait till GTAIV.).

I know it’s shocking, but I’m a person. Most importantly I’m a gamer. I got frustrated, I ranted on my blog. It’s what I do. I mean come on… would I ride a roller coaster with something I didn’t like?… I think the answer to that is evident. ;)

I hope that puts it in a bit more perspective. The truth is we have a FANTASTIC working relationship with Sony. SCEE has been a huge help in helping us get the Variety Map Pack to come out in line with SCEA so we have a simultaneous worldwide release this Thursday, April 24th.

We also have Play W/ Devs Event on Friday where the IW crew and myself will be playing with you guys on PSN all day to kick off the Map Pack release and DOUBLE XP WEEKEND! I’ll also be stopping by the Official Playstation Blog this week to chat a bit more about all of this and to you guys, so be sure to check that out.

Let me know if there is anything else I can address or answer for you guys and I’d be more than happy to.

  • Geoff // April 23, 2008 at 12:50 am

I think we just want to know why we have been getting COD4 stuff after 360, since i dont think we have gotten an Official reason why 360 got the maps and patch first. But thanks for updating us about you and your PS3

  • whocares // April 23, 2008 at 12:52 am

cause microsoft payed for 21 days of exclusivity

  • s0uL // April 23, 2008 at 12:53 am

OMG you stole a candy bar when u was nine ;p

  • fourzerotwo // April 23, 2008 at 12:54 am

@ Geoff - I can fully understand that. In the end it all comes down to boring development production lines. Release dates depend wholly on when something comes down the production pipeline and into QA, and therefore through Certification first.

Once a game ships, developers typically cut their QA departments down because the work load is less, and may not have the bandwidth to test multiple platforms at once, so it’s a matter of which gets finished first in development.

Any deals on the back end which were rumored are purely for ad space to promote the maps. Which is done on both sides (ads on Xbox Live Marketplace and PSN store).

    ummm…… april 24 is thursday.

  • BoB // April 23, 2008 at 12:57 am

and that great that you don’t hate us the ps3 users

  • fourzerotwo // April 23, 2008 at 12:58 am

    @Jman - Thanks. Updated it.

  • thadeus // April 23, 2008 at 1:00 am

If there really are no backroom deals with Microsoft or Sony to give them content before other platforms then I really think you should talk to your bosses and tell them how much the community hates one group getting something before another. You really should think about getting all ducks lined up in a row and put everything out at the same time - even if one console is finished before others hold it back until everything is ready to go. I guarantee that overall you will have a happier user base. But as it is right now one group always appears to get special treatment and the other two feel like their getting crapped on and that you dont care.

  • derf // April 23, 2008 at 1:00 am

    @402

what is your psn id so i can try to one day play a game with you

  • Cbroph // April 23, 2008 at 1:01 am

Hey, I was wondering do you play any CoD games on the PC, and if you do, do you have x-fire?

  • Geoff // April 23, 2008 at 1:03 am

@fourzerotwo Thanks for that, During PS3s time out in the dark about the maps we felt like we were being ignored. ok, its good to know that its just that 360 is easier to dev. for.

How do we get to play with u guys on Friday?
I want to play with u guys, PSN: fatty65

  • fourzerotwo // April 23, 2008 at 1:07 am

    @ Geoff and Derf:

I’ll be posting the PSN IDs for me and the rest of IW playing this week. My PSN ID is fourzerotwoiw.

  • Geoff // April 23, 2008 at 1:10 am

ya, But i tried to add you and i got a Message that you had the max amount of people on ur friends?
What are you going to do about that?

  • daprofessor217 // April 23, 2008 at 1:12 am

You worked at IW at the time that statement was released, as a public relations spokesperson those statements were not wise. Also, you act like Microsoft has never taken over a company or put one out of business. It’s good though that you have released an official statement on how you feel about the PS3. Also, I was wondering if you are sick, this is the most I have ever seen you on this blog lol.

  • fourzerotwo // April 23, 2008 at 1:22 am

@daprofessor217: Yeah, I’ve been making sure to take more time to blog in an effort to keep you guys more informed.

  • daprofessor217 // April 23, 2008 at 1:27 am

Well that’s good I’m glad this community is starting to get some attention. When we can get a patch or dlc before xbox, I will really begin to wonder lol. We definitely appreciate it so keep up the good work.

  • whocares // April 23, 2008 at 1:28 am

i think it is funny you show up in the nick of time to calm the ps3ers so they will spend more money on your product (new maps)which is really only a single player game now ….. hhm coincidence? think not my friend ….other games want my money and they can have it and your statements about ” we will take in account in future titles” tells me you have no intentions of fixing this broken game …you can fix all the future products you want but if no one is there to play them does it matter ?

  • Goon360 // April 23, 2008 at 1:37 am

    What candybar was it??? Zagnut??

  • OmegaArchetype // April 23, 2008 at 1:41 am

    I agree with Thadeus.

Lately I (and I’m sure other PS3/PC users) have felt as if we were put aside to cater to the 360 only. I understand that the times aren’t your choice (as far as how long it takes to make something ready,) but as Thadeus said, I think it should be all release at the same time.

Visit some forums from different websites. From what I’ve seen not many PS3 users are very happy with they way things have been going for us (of course concerning COD4.)

The game you guys created is amazing, but of course nothing’s perfect. It’s hard to enjoy the game if you’re constantly having to do tedious things (such as re-grouping after a ‘Host Ended Game’ etc.) I feel these things should have been fixed with the patch release, but that wasn’t the case (not blaming you or IW for that matter.)

We just want to make sure that we’re not left hanging over something as dumb as favoritism or money. Money is there, you’ve just got to keep everyone happy, or I’d assume you’d lose more on angry customers.

  • sosad // April 23, 2008 at 1:45 am

It’s sad that the only way somebody could get you to communicate with the PS3 and PC communities was to dig through your two year old blog postings. I have seen more blog entries and forum posts in the past two days concerning the PS3 than ever before. Coincidence, I think not.

  • fourzerotwo // April 23, 2008 at 1:51 am

@ sosad: Of course it’s not coincidence. This weekend is Call of Duty 4’s biggest weekend on PS3 since launch with the Variety Map Pack hitting PSN, Double XP, and play with devs. Lots of stuff happening on the PS3 this week / weekend.

I told you guys awhile back that it would seem like the Xbox 360 is getting a lot of attention because a lot of stuff would be going on, and now it’s the PS3’s turn.

I totally agree I wish there was perfect console synergy and all production could be done and finished exactly the same on each platform, but we wouldn’t hold up one platform simply because another isn’t finished.

  • Brian // April 23, 2008 at 1:55 am

    402,

I know I’ve been very harsh at times in the past, but like you suggested, we all get frustrated. I do appreciate that you’ve been giving us information within the past day or so. I understand you don’t always have something to report, but I along with several other people voicing their frustration appreciate letting us know you’re listening, so I appreciate that you’ve begun doing that.

But if the reason for the delay on PS3 is because of limited resources, how does it work out that the PS3 gets two significant delays, on both the patch AND the DLC? It’s just a coincidence that Xbox got finished first both times? Why not give the ps3 something first for a change? Or hold both for a simultaneous release?

A lot of the frustration with delay came with continued stories that MS had paid for exclusivity-it may be because of people trying to sell stories or whatever, but the long delay without hearing from you as to the truth, along with the fact that you knew it would be 21 days from the Xbox release made people suspicios.

To clear things up, despite what some may think, I don’t hate this game. It’s been a blast, single player was amazing, and multiplayer is a lot of fun (when it’s not dampened by desynch/lag/poor hit detection and spawning into immediate death).

  • whocares // April 23, 2008 at 1:55 am

  • daprofessor217 // April 23, 2008 at 2:09 am

I agree with sosad for the most part with the exception of him seeing the most negative ps3 posts in the past two days. This community has been put second since day 1. In a way it is sad that we had to dig for posts to get your full attention on issues, but it’s also sad that you are still dodging questions.

In all fairness the map packs/patches should have been released together for the consoles. If they were released together there would not have been a community left out in the dark feeling neglected.

The ps3 community feeling neglected is probably your fault since you are like the middle man between the developers and the consumers. I think you may need to communicate more with the developers about our problems with the host ending games, mics cutting out often, downloading game settings, and connection interrupted.

  • thadeus // April 23, 2008 at 2:18 am

    >>>but we wouldn’t hold up one platform simply because another isn’t finished.

Thats exactly the point though. You really *should* consider doing that. Instead of having an entire Console fan group enraged that you appear to be favoring the other platform you’ll only have some disgruntled people impatient that content hasnt been released yet. Its the lesser of the two evils. Even though you have millions of people playing right now youve also driven away who knows how many thousands by the *appearence* of favoritism. Its like having 3 kids with birthday cake - if you give 1 his cake the other 2 will cry. If you make all 3 wait you’ll get some whinging but in the end everyone will be happy.

    /lame analogy ;)

  • thadeus // April 23, 2008 at 2:20 am

    >>>In all fairness the map packs/patches should have been released together for the consoles. If they were released together there would not have been a community left out in the dark feeling neglected.

Right on daprofessor. Its easy to see this is a more fair way of doing things. Please consider it IW.

  • Geoff // April 23, 2008 at 2:20 am

YES, Host ending games is SOOOO Annoying, a few days ago i got cut out of 6 games in a row, i understand that something happened with yur servers and putting the Host Migration in but you really need to fix it. And since we had to wait for the patch it should have worked.

  • Mindfloodz // April 23, 2008 at 2:21 am

    402 -

I was curious, what time, EXACTLY, will the maps be avaliable on the PSN store (CST)? At the stroke of midnight willl they be avaliable for download on PST, or later in the day?

    Thanks for your time

  • Bob Bowling // April 23, 2008 at 2:28 am

Trying to kiss and make up now?

Well, try and make IW aware of the dozens of problems affecting CoD4 online on the PS3.. and FIX THEM

    Till then..

There will be absolutely no Infinity Ward product in my game room. That includes PS1, PS2, and ESPECIALLY PS3!! As far as I’m concerning, Infinity Ward and 402 can eat it. Sorry.

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 2:31 am

Yeah, like daprofessor said, a lot of people in the PS3 community feel as they have been neglected, yes, we understand that now it’s the PS3’s turn to get attention, but what’s the point when we always finish up second? All those 360 fanboys are all bragging about how their system gets stuff first cause’ they are better. Instead of giving 360 stuff first because the development for that system is faster and easier, try holding it up till the PS3 is finished too. Yeah, 360 users will complain, and so what? They had their time to brag, give them time to complain. They can’t expect first dibs on everything.

What I’m trying to say here is that give PS3 some things first instead of always giving them to 360. Because if you guys don’t you’re gonna have a huge mass of angry Ps3 users and that, I’m afraid will have a lot to do with you, since you are the main gateway between IW and the users. I’m not saying it’s all your fault, but you really have to look towards the PS3 direction.

  • KaRmA // April 23, 2008 at 2:34 am

    @thadeus
you said it yourself millions of people playing on xbox thousands on ps3 if thats not enough incentive to focus on xbox i dont know what is

  • KaRmA // April 23, 2008 at 2:38 am

and host migration for 360 is no better all it saves you is 2 clicks game still ends when host leaves

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 2:43 am

@Karma, so because the 360 has more people is a great reason to hold back on the other console. Yeah, great thing to do when it comes to business, but will it really pay off once the other community gets all angry?

And yeah it saves you 2 clicks, but it also saves you from having to re-invite every single damn member in your party, especially if you were playing with people that weren’t on your friends list. Doesn’t matter to 360 users at all, but try thinking about this from a different perspective, a perspective in which people feel neglected and forgotten

  • OmegaArchetype // April 23, 2008 at 2:44 am

We realize that KaRmA, but have you actually ran with a complete party of 6 (or 9 for Ground War) and had to re-group entirely because of Host Ended Game or connection interruption with your nice new host migration?

Probably not since the patch. It gets old…real fast.

Well here we PS3 users are having to deal with it still, but according to an earlier blog from 402, it was due to PSN and the way it is built or something to that nature. Still I’d assume that something can be done about it. What do I know though, I’m not a developer so I could be wrong.

Also, I don’t care if we get the content first, what I care about is that we aren’t set aside like we seem to be lately.

  • who cares // April 23, 2008 at 2:48 am

    nice smoke and mirrors, 402.

mention the OMG DOUBLE XP WEEKEND!!!!11 a few more times, maybe they’ll forget.

  • KaRmA // April 23, 2008 at 2:54 am

thats my point to you all the majority of cod4’s fanbase is most likely on the 360 and like 402 said after launch they reduced the size of their team idk y they should just have a ps3 and 360 team that would end this all but they dont. so they develop for the majority rather than the minority makes sense to me considering there would be about 10x as many pissed off people if it were switched

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 2:58 am

402, look at all these replies to this one blog post. Look at the voices of daprofessor,Omega, Thadeus and others. Yeah, we all appreciate you releasing this info and trying to raise the morale of the PS3 user’s thoughts toward all this, but look, it’s not enough. Words are easy to say, a baby can easily say a word, but what about action? It’s time for you guys at IW to take action if you want a huge majority of PS3 users to stay happy. If you just ignore us because we are “not important enough” or are “inferior” to 360 or just “a small portion” of consumers, then you better go sell your company to a more worthy one. Just promoting the fact Ps3 users are getting attention now isn’t going to cut it no more. I’m sure everyone will agree with me when I say ” Discuss this with IW try being fair to all consumers, both 360 and PS3, delay release dates of more DLC for either console if you have to, but by all means try being fair to us all.”

  • thadeus // April 23, 2008 at 3:02 am

    >>>@thadeus
you said it yourself millions of people playing on xbox thousands on ps3 if thats not enough incentive to focus on xbox i dont know what is

    @KaRmA
I didn’t say millions were playing on Xbox360 and only thousands on PS3. ;) Although theres no question that Xbox360 has more players there’s also a huge number on PS3 I’d guess over 1 million at least.

What I was saying is that there are millions of people playing COD4 across all 3 platforms but because of a lot of these issues many thousands maybe even tens of thousands have become disgruntled and probably driven away. People are going to become bored and leave eventually anyway but I dont think its smart to speed up that process by their questionable release schedules for content on the different platforms.

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 3:02 am

@Karma then for the love of god, switch the damned numbers of angry consumers. 360 fanboys need to know how it’s like to be denied getting things first instead of only knowing the feeling of being pampered like a 1 year old baby, if this continues, IW might as well award 360 users a warm milk bottle for every 7 kill streak instead of a helicopter

  • Mallard // April 23, 2008 at 3:03 am

IW is a business, like it or not. It will always be within a company’s best interest to receive a return on their investment as soon as possible. For IW to create a patch, map pack, etc… it would be stupid of them to hold it off just to wait for the other systems. Otherwise, they then have an asset that is just sitting and they are losing money. It also makes business sense that the system with the largest fan base gets things first. Yes it sucks, however from a financial stand point they want to make their money back in the shortest period of time as well as grab as much capital from gamers before they move on to the next game. So from that point of view I can understand IW putting PS3 on the back burner to some extent. BUT IW with its infusion of liquidity over the past 6 months should look at the marginal cost of adding extra developers after release so that there isn’t the time lag that exists.
People aren’t stupid; it is defiantly within the best interests of a company to take care of its base. You take care of us and we’ll take care of you. The added cost of extra developers after a title is released has to be minimal, as with most software development, profit margins are usually very good for a top title. In all, IW is doing what it believes makes the best financial sense, however they have failed to realize the full extent to realize profits by adding more developers and decrease lag between updates. Just a reminder to IW set your MC=MB to maximize revenue with Elasticity equal to 1.

  • Brian // April 23, 2008 at 3:05 am

Agreed with WarBacon7 and the others he references.

Oh, and the equivalent to the thread that got this whole thing started is now at 15 pages on the official ps3 forums. It probably has not gone unnoticed by those in charge over there.

I still don’t buy why the Xbox magically clears whatever processes it goes through at IW before the PS3. Here’s a solution, an alternative to delaying a release…if you scale back your departments such that you can’t simultaneously release patches and DLC, do one of two things:

    1) stop acting like you support multiple platforms and just develop for the Xbox, or
    2) make sure your departments have the resources to support all the platforms EQUALLY after release.

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 3:07 am

Exactly, yeah businesses work like that and IW is a business. But IW have to really look towards us once in a while, not just everytime somebody complains

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 3:09 am

Agreed with Brian. If IW is just going to produce for the larger party, might as well cancel PS3 content all together. And when the sales drop, we know some people to blame at least

  • OmegaArchetype // April 23, 2008 at 3:32 am

    @Mallard

I don’t know about you, but from what I read, COD4 hit 9 million just the other day. Let’s see 9 million x $60 =$540 million dollars.

Honestly, it didn’t take nearly that much to make the game. So based of my (possibly terrible, and incorrect) math, I’d say IW is in pretty damn good shape when it comes to profit on this game alone. Maybe I’m wrong, but if these companies want to make sure they make good profit, it might be a good idea to make sure your customers don’t desert you because you deserted them.

I’m sorry to say this, but if things continue the way they have been, I may no longer be an IW customer (and I believe I’m not alone when I say that.)

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 3:44 am

No you are not. I mean, 402 and IW are all great people, we don’t hate them. They created a game we all love and they all try to help us in every way they can. But like what we all said all over and over again, they have to stop leaving PS3 in the dust when it comes to COD4. Nobody wants to leave IW because they forgot about us

  • Mallard // April 23, 2008 at 3:53 am

    @OmegaArchetype

Well that would be gross revenue, subtract licensing, distribution, adverting, development, etc… Its much less. Although, as I stated they have had a huge rush of liquidity. Not knowing the company’s financial’s and knowing their debt and other bits of information, its hard for me to asses the company and why they may be doing what they are doing. With that being said, with the large rush of capital coming in at once, it is best for IW to lengthen the capital inflow by doing what they are doing… patches, map packs, etc… However, the added cost of adding more developers to test and implement these additions, in my opinion, would be much less then the additional benefit. Meaning that they shouldn’t keep the staff at bare bones when a title is exploding like cod4 has been. They are losing money by not bringing these map packs to PS3 faster, unless MS did pay for exclusivity and one could assume confidentiality. I’m not defending IW but it may make financial sense within the company but whoever is the CFO may not being doing the best job possible.

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 3:58 am

402, we know you don’t hate the PS3, but I don’t think you love it either. Just by looking at your game collection for the PS3, I can tell, you’re not exactly crazy about PS3, but that’s fine, that’s your point of view. But COD4 isn’t a 360 exclusive. But, by the looks of things, you might as well call Call Of Duty 4, “Halo 4 Modern Warfare”

  • OmegaArchetype // April 23, 2008 at 4:04 am

“However, the added cost of adding more developers to test and implement these additions, in my opinion, would be much less then the additional benefit. Meaning that they shouldn’t keep the staff at bare bones when a title is exploding like cod4 has been. They are losing money by not bringing these map packs to PS3 faster, unless MS did pay for exclusivity and one could assume confidentiality.”

That makes alot of sense, and is what I’m trying to get at among other things. Also, yes, I do know about all the other things that go into making a game, but $540 million dollars + $10 million just off of the map pack on 360, is alot of freakin money, and I’d assume would give IW a good profit even after all the other stuff.

  • Bravura // April 23, 2008 at 4:08 am

A little on a different note… it would be cool to have something for people that are on the final prestige with capped XP! Like, I don’t know, double headshots? That would be pretty cool for us “yellow crosses”!

P.S. I can appreciate double xp, just throwing that idea out there, even though it’s probably too late.. maybe next time.

  • Fossil // April 23, 2008 at 4:08 am

Now if we all string our thoughts together and cut most of the negativity out…… we’ve answered most of our own questions.

This is a business, 402 is the gateway and is only allowed to answer a minority of our questions.

Coincidence is that the map pack is/or released with the new week old PSN store. There are probably hundreds of thousands of ppl wanting to download the maps, this will promote SONY’s product, the store, and allow them to see if the site can handle all of the traffic. If I recall properly, it was shortly after the map pack release on the xbox that 402 mentioned that SONY had to cert. it………..

402 already explained the IW working side of things, the xbox is easier to develop for. I think this is a pat on the back considering IMO that the PS3 has more power and still needs to be tapped into. Imagine when IW does tap into this gawd of a machine, COD6 will be that much more amazing.

Nothing is perfect and they will be working on the issues we have, they have to figure it out first. Usually in real life, when one things goes right two other things are affected.

And if you are still having issues, learn to play the game better….. even I blame lag and hit detection when I’m having a bad game.

I hope to play you IW folks this Friday evening!!!

  • The ChosenOne // April 23, 2008 at 4:09 am

I don’t know wether to scream or cry. I want to cry with excitement that the psn is getting a worldwide release(uk) now, and I want to scream that it has been so long, even though it doesn’t on the surface, appear to be anyones fault.

  • The ChosenOne // April 23, 2008 at 4:11 am

On another note I just completed the level which includes broadcast on single player, on the most difficult setting. Damn that shit’s hard!! I just kept chucking grenades and the tangos eventually dropped. *wipes sweat from his brow.

  • Mallard // April 23, 2008 at 4:22 am

Absolutely, with games coming and going as fast as they do, it is within a developers best interest to capture as much of the market as they can. But if their financials or current facilities are hindering them, they need to address that. I”m sure there are a lot of other game developers with excess capacity to outsource these problems if IW is being hindered by “bandwidth” or other lack of capital goods investment.

In all, it makes sense to get a return on your investment as soon as possible, however the additional benefits, not only in the short run but long run as well, should make it attractive for IW to hire and get these additions to market asap. But not forget that it is your hardcore fan base that will keep you afloat of sink you. Loyalty is a companies best friend, ask Coke, Nike, etc… that is a long term idea’s that IW has not thought out yet or shown but have enjoyed with the successful cod series. In all, if there is a financial reason for the delays, fine, fix it. Lack of capital goods investment, capital is relatively cheap so think short term (outsource) and long term (expansion). IW has a great product and the potential to expand even further, therefore they need to do something soon. Or else they are going to loose more than just profits.

  • fourzerotwo // April 23, 2008 at 4:23 am

@ Fossil: Excellent post. I totally agree that the Playstation 3 has a massive amount of untapped power. We’re starting to see the edge of that in games coming out in the next few months but I can’t wait till our next PS3 game as I know we’re going to really take advantage of what we’ve learned on our debut PS3 game (COD4) and the unharnessed power that’s yet to be tapped.

  • The ChosenOne // April 23, 2008 at 4:28 am

tap that sh*t lol. Do you actually write them 402? You seem like a clever enough guy.

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 4:29 am

Fossil, way to look at things differently! Yes, you have pointed out huge points. Maybe we were all too angry to point out the answers in our own rants. Thanks. Yes, 360 probably is easier to develop for, and yes PS3 does have huge ass awesome power that’s left untapped. But considering what they did to COD4, COD6 better be the shit and be way better than COD4 and if Sony or Microsoft don’t release new consoles, I’m sure we all want some equality and fairness when it comes to both consoles. I’ve been looking at the 2 year old blogs and see what happens when you favor those pieces of shit? They all go snotty because they fail to see this differently and all keep shoving things up their ass till their ass has red rings like their consoles. So I apologize 402, for anything that might have offended you, but I’m sure you can see that I, like many other PS3 users/fanboys, whatever you wish to call us have become very angry, but hopefully, with the next COD4 update hopefully that will add a new primary weapon/ perk/ attachment(eotech!) you and the guys at IW will be fair, and take these words into account and try to hold off the release for the 360 until the PS3’s potential has been tapped for the update

  • The ChosenOne // April 23, 2008 at 4:35 am

on another note has anyone been having connectivy issues today. I haven’t been able to play cod4 all day because of the playstation network? sucks.

  • derf // April 23, 2008 at 4:40 am

    @402

what did you think of people using the glitch.
for myself i found it really frustrating.
and did you know if a patch is in the process to correct this.

    thank you

  • derf // April 23, 2008 at 4:41 am

i dont have problem today i just stop playing at the moment and everything was fine

  • KaRmA // April 23, 2008 at 4:47 am

    @wabacon7
i noticed you said “IW might as well award 360 users a warm milk bottle for every 7 kill streak instead of a helicopter” last time i checked ps3 players were all over the forums crying not 360 owners. can you say ps3 fanboy?

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 4:51 am

    @Karma

Call me what you want yeah sure I might be a fanboy, why do you care, but from what I know, the fact that most 360 users are all snotty and feel pampered led me to say that and the snotty ones are the reason we “PS3 fanboys” are “crying”

Oh yeah, and here I’ll say it 3 times for the sake of the PS3 “ps3 fanboy”,”ps3 fanboy”, “ps3 fanboy”.

  • The ChosenOne // April 23, 2008 at 4:56 am

hmmm, thanks derf, seems like it’s just me, I’m in the UK so it may be different.

  • KaRmA // April 23, 2008 at 5:02 am

y are we snotty because we have a bigger fanbase so we get more attention from the company. sounds to me that your just mad and need a hug. y are you so against the 360 its a very good system with great games sure it breaks every now and again but ill take that(2nd 360 1st rrod 1 year after launch but good since then) and considering that this is the system most developers prefer right now ill stick with it for a while maybe if you gave it a try you would like it ps3 will have its day but i’ve been enjoying games on my 360 for 3 years now over 10,000 gamerscore and rising perhaps one day i will buy a ps3 but they are gonna have to show me something good. until then 360FTW!!!

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 5:07 am

Yeah, 360 is a great system other than it’s hardware flaws, but notice I said most. And when you read some of the posts I read, yeah, you would say just about anything that rants against 360. If you wanna know what, go to that 2 year old blog. The snotty 360 users are the ones who can’t stfu about how 360 is better or some other kind of BS

  • SharkBait // April 23, 2008 at 5:08 am

@karma: “last time i checked ps3 players were all over the forums crying not 360 owners.”

Part of that is because 360 owners have gotten their stuff relatively quickly. But when things are bad (connection problems, for example) 360 owners can be just as angry on forums.

The other thing is, when you look at a lot of these blogs, a PS3 or PC user will chime in asking 402 for something and will be met with multiple 360 users saying things like “ha ha PS3 sux, 360 pwns”, basically baiting them into a fight.

As some other peeps said above, the “whining” as some call it, comes from feeling like they’re being mistreated by IW. Some say this is whining, others say they are consumers who are just fed up and letting IW know about it.

  • KaRmA // April 23, 2008 at 5:12 am

well ill say it here i think the ps3 is the more powerfull system but its to advanced for its own good the 360 however is much more user and creator friendly and will continue to own the market until sony gives the devs the tools to harness this “ps3 power” i hope they do bc i loved the first killzone and hope they make the second into a masterpiece perhaps then i will buy a ps3

  • The ChosenOne // April 23, 2008 at 5:12 am

  • The ChosenOne // April 23, 2008 at 5:16 am

Well seeing as I’ve already spent 9 days of my life on COD4 online, I can say I have. And GTA4, mgo are coming.

  • WarBacon7 // April 23, 2008 at 5:18 am

And @Karma, yeah probably will be like this, till Sony give game dev’s the proper tools, but when they do, you’ll see what the PS3 can really do. And the problem with most people is, they mistook the PS3. They don’t call it a entertainment system for nothing. Don’t say all we got extra is a blu-ray drive. We got that for a reason. PS3 is a entertainment system not a gaming system. The 360 isn’t as strong because why? It’s a gaming system. The extra blu-ray isn’t nessacerily for gaming. So for now, I guess you can say the 2 consoles are on par. But like you said, once the potential is tapped, the PS3 will go beyond it’s limits, you’ll see

  • KaRmA // April 23, 2008 at 5:20 am

2 of the three games you listed are multiplatform+ 2 havn’t even released yet how long have you had your ps3 and if more than a year what were you playing b4 cod4. the ps3 people are going to be awfully mad when the exclusive gta4 content hits the live marketplace

Quick question?. When does GOTY come out. Some websitees say thursday and when you go to pre-order in the store they say May 7th. Confusing…..

I have had my ps3 since February 2008 which means I’ve nearly played cod4 1 full day of each week i’ve had it.
before my ps3 I was gutted that everyone had 360s and I didn’t. it was a sad time of my life, being stuck with the likes of James Bond: Nightfire and gta san andreas.

  • lilherb // April 23, 2008 at 5:31 am

I’m just sad that IW isn’t going to be making COD: 5 old-warfare. This is the only game to come out (sorry if somebody else has their own opinion) that is truely a halo killer. I love what IW did with this game and I’ve been addicted to it since I got it the day it first came out in November.

  • Hey 402, // April 23, 2008 at 5:36 am

Will COD4 ever have the option to choose a map you want to play on. Only saying this because sometimes it seems the same maps repeat over and over while others rarely come up. I know if you stay with a group this doesn’t happen as much but there are always server connection errors and disconnects. When the new maps come out I fear there will be alot of favorites that rarely come up.

  • The ChosenOne // April 23, 2008 at 5:39 am

For those of you online, a quick question. Which is your favourite map, and which do you suck at most?

My Favourite: Overgrown without a doubt
    I suck at: Crossfire

  • Pedro // April 23, 2008 at 8:21 am

I used to hate Sony, and in the past they deserved every bit of that hate. But Sony has come a long way, they are doing good things, specially with the PS3, i have one and love it. It´s far from absolute perfection, but is getting there.

People change their minds and that is OK, specially when that change of mind has some kind of intelligent rationale.

  • Brian // April 23, 2008 at 8:39 am

    Hey 402,

If you’re still actually reading, and passing on issues to the relevant people, or answering questions here are a few:

if we can’t get any form of host migration for the ps3, why don’t they make it where when some idiot who figures out he’s the host (aka the only guy with four bars) and ends the game, the game does not count as a decision. It’s just plain stupid when you get a “defeat” because the host ended the game immediately after he or his team gets ahead.

And how about that crappy spawning? Facing walls, spawning into grenades, spawning right in front of enemies, etc.

And the hit detection, that is still horrendous much of the time?

And lag/desynch? people who had no lag problems (such as myself, among others) have noticed lag has gotten progressively worse. We can play other games such as WarHawk with no problems whatsover.

And how about the hacking on the leaderboards? How are we supposed to have confidence in the intregity of other aspects of the game when you let these blatantly false and ridiculous statistics continue?

  • DolphGB @ PS3Attitude // April 23, 2008 at 9:37 am

    Hey Rob.

I certainly never held anything against your opinion. At PS3 Attitude, we often question what is happening in Sony’s world because we’re not happy with something, but it doesn’t stop us from continuing to be a PS3-only site.

I do, however, have something against people who accept LinkedIn requests but then never answer any emails… ;-) (hint, hint)

BTW - CoD4 is still officially our favourite multiplayer experience - great job all round guys!

  • Lucas // April 23, 2008 at 9:48 am

Thanks a lot for addressing this issues, you went beyond what I expected and I’m sure we all appreciate it.

I mean, the image alone negates any other issue brought up. :P

    @Lucas

You do know you’ll burn in hell for that, right? ;) But no seriously, I think it shows great character to apologize for it.

    @Robert

You just made my day by posting that image :D I honestly woke my roommate just to show it to him…
I think the console wars are getting old. Yey PS3! Yey X360! F*** PC! *yawn*.
Everybody chooses for consoles they feel most comfortable with. If the games are cross-platform, good for you (or everybody). But like Robert said, the production pipelines are different which automatically makes it hard to release stuff all together.

But then again, I think I can talk easy because I only play CoD4 on X360 so I’ve been playing the maps for a while now. Yes, I DO own a PS3 but I prefer (personal opinion) the X360 on this one.

  • ohagan84 // April 23, 2008 at 11:39 am

I wouldn’t even threat about it i don’t care if you slated sony. The fact is your entitled to your own opinion and if people have a problem with so what. Anyway looking forward to the map pack tommorow and owning you online if i get the chance to play you. HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • mlataupe // April 23, 2008 at 11:41 am

Funny enough, I might be getting CoD4 for my PS3 pretty soon although I already own a copy of it for my 360.
Thing is my 360 buddies rarely play this game (let alone any other game) on XBL while some of my friends and colleagues recently got their hands on a PS3 and will be playing COD4.

Just to put it in perspective, in the end, it doesn’t really matter what system gets what first as long as you’re able to play a great game with your pals. And IW did a great job shipping 3 outstanding versions of their game simultaneoulsy for each of the 3 major platform.

And I’m pretty sure they did their best to ship content asap on any of those platforms. Validation process, ressources and all that make it os that you probably can’t ship DLC at the same time on all platform. I can understand that. COD4’s largest fan base is on the 360 and that’s a fact. Being a fanboy isn’t gonna change anything about it.

IW should get props for doing a great job as a game developper. Remember that hal the shit on the market isn’t woth 2 pennies.
For once EVERYONE can get a game that’s worth the money you pay for it. So stop hatin’.

  • The ChosenOne // April 23, 2008 at 11:47 am

Brian I’d love to give you a 1-1 on backlot, can you post your gamerid. Then we can talk more about hit detection.

  • Alarich // April 23, 2008 at 12:35 pm

    Hey 402,

first of all I want to thank you for providing us always with the newest information from the devs of our favorite game!

I come from Germany and I play CoD4 on PS3 since the first day it was released. I quess that I’m one of the oldest player around (43 years) and I like to tell you my opinion about some points (sorry for my poor english).

    1. Releasedates of patches/packs 360 vs. PS3
As long as Sony sells less systems in USA (and worldwide) than Microsoft already did I can fully understand that IW prefers to satisfy the needs of those users they earn the most money from… I would do the same… I think the beak-even point 360 vs. PS3 sells will be reached christmas 2008.

    2. Host migration/ selection
I agree with lots of posts here: It’s just annoying if you play a nice match and suddenly the game stops because another player’s mother calles him for lunch… It is also frustrating that you have a very poor game connection when you onw a 16000 kbit line. Could you please explain in detail how the host-selection currently works. And: Wouldn’t it be possible to sign somehow the actual host and his line-speed in the lobby? If that would be possible we could decide if it’s worth to play on this host BEFORE the game starts.

    3. Leaderboards/Bugs
Somewhen in December 07 or January 08 I played online and suddently I played as another player! Ever since them all my points, kills, wins a.s.o. are wrong (ca. 180000 points less than before, about 2000 kill less, a.s.o.) and nobody was able to help. Activisions helpdesk don’t even know who is in response for the PS3 leaderboard. All they told me was to open my (alreday opened) ports on my router and that I should hope for the next patch.

    4. Respawning problem
I fully agree with Brian. It’s no fun when you respawn 5 times in a series in lots of grenades (esp. in Transport) or if you face walls, skys, enemies in front of you. This should be clearly overworked by IW.

    5. Radiant for PS3
Is it planned to get a radiant (map-editor) also for consoles? If this is not possible: Is it planned to create PS3 program to transfer PC-maps to the PS3?

    6. CoD5
In some reports I read that Activision plans to produce CoD5 NOT with IW and that it will beeing placed AGAIN in WWII!! Would you tell them that this is a very very stupid idea, please! One reason for the great success of CoD4 is that it has NOTHING TO DO with WWII. It would be MUCH better to produce a continuance of the CoD4-Storyline WITH IW!

In general and because I’m working in software development myself I can say IW did a great job!!

  • The-Unknown // April 23, 2008 at 12:52 pm

“Let me know if there is anything else I can address or answer for you guys and I’d be more than happy to.” - Are there any plans to implement a prefered map option? As my only annoyance is that more often than not I search for a game (Hardcore TDM) and get put into a map that I don’t feel like playing, I quit and search again just to be put back in the same game again and again. This literally is my only complaint about the whole game, and although the search by game mode is quick and simple, I can’t help but think a lobby-list for you to choose from would of been better.

  • DutchNeon // April 23, 2008 at 1:02 pm

This question is not related to the topic about the ps3, but are there any plans on releasing a Soundtrack of CoD4? Would be awesome to have a soundtrack will all the ingame music, background music on multiplayer maps etc.

  • Iwas138 // April 23, 2008 at 1:06 pm

402 - I don’t care about your excuses or your lame attempts to placate PS3 owners. The fact remains that you are and will remain a committed 360 fanboy. Now that your comments about PS3 have come back to haunt you, your back peddling is quite pathetic and if I were your boss you’d be looking for another job.
You truly make me sick. You shouldn’t be in a PR role. Based on your comments and history of neglect and attitude, I would suggest a career more suited to your abilities. Possible career choices for you include; Sanitation Engineer, Petroleum Dispenser Technician, or lastly Fecal Waste Removal Specialist at the zoo.

As far as IW is concerned, I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy anything from you or Activision again. Keep your silly new maps too. I wouldn’t get them even if they were free. Your company sucks and I hope you go bankrupt.

Everyone who bought the PS3 had a choice. Not saying you could have known that it would get these things later, but I am saying you still have a choice. You can go get an Xbox 360, and get this stuff when Xbox gets it, or you can stop bitching and wait like everyone else who has a PS3.

    Well said Ryan.

  • Desidarious // April 23, 2008 at 2:18 pm

    402,

Have you considered doing any investigation into how others handle network communication with gaming?

Consider that Unreal Tournament for the PC has been out for a while. I used to play it.. probably 5 or 6 years ago. Initially there were lag issues (mostly due to the fact that broadband was not as ubiquitous as it is fast becoming.) The makers of UT (Epic I believe) came out with a Zero Latency patch. which worked miracles for online play. I went from getting smoked all the time to a 2:1 kill/death ratio… which is about my skill level.

I know that COD4 suffers from some kind of network latency issues. To clarify, it suffers from its inability to properly deal with it.

COD4 may seem like it is a much more sophisticated game than UT, but at the heart of the network play, it is much the same… clients tell the host “Hey my guy is a point (x,y,z) moving toward (x,y,z) at (x) velocity. He’s firing weapon (A) at 46.5 degrees toward point (x,y,z) with these attributes (Stopping Power, Deep Impact) . Let me know if he hits/kills anything or if something hits/kills him… etc.”

I know I have simplified the communications a bit, but what I am driving at is that while the physics of COD4 may require more data as UT , it is not an exponential increase in data.. is simply cannot be. And all the while, there has been an exponential increase in bandwidth (from 56K to 11Mb)

I get very, very frustrated with this game knowing that it is not my skill level that determines whether I have a good game, it is whether or not I am getting my full 11Mb or just 4.5Mb. Or perhaps just luck of the draw.. who knows? There seems to be no rhyme nor reason… just really good and really frustrating.

I would enjoy the game so much more if I didn’t find myself having to (at times) empty my entire M4 clip into an enemy just to kill him (or better yet, injure him enough to delay his killing me.)

Seriously, I have complained about this many times before. Please consider learning from others experience and make your network communications libraries do a better job of dealing with latency.

I have faith in the fact that:

“If Epic could do it well 5 yrs ago, at 56K or ISDN.. then IW can do it well at 5Mbp”

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but I know PS3 and XBOX users alike would like to hear something about this.

    Thanks,
    Desi

First things first………..THANK YOU IW for creating such an AWESOME game!! It is one of the best online games EVER! We have had so much fun…….it’s like being hooked on crack.

Everyone has posted a lot of great info/questions. But there are at least 2 basic questions that MUST be answered?

    1) Why has the host migration not been fixed?

When you guys at IW play, do you not see it? It happens ALL the time……several times within an hour…..some poor sap gets his but kicked and he ends the game……or……for any numerous reasons, the host leaves and the rest of us are out in the cold, having to try to regroup. This really should have been fixed in the last patch, but was not, and it almost seems worse now. PLEASE tell us you are working on this!!

    2) Microsoft rules……right? It is so very frustrating to us PS3 users that it “seems” like Microsoft is being catered to, while PS 3 users have to sit back and just take it. I agree with the post above…..knowing that Ps3 users would get their DLC 21 days AFTER 360 users sounds really suspicious. If it is true, just have IW admit it up front. Let’s face it. If you make an awesome game (such as COD4) people on all platforms will buy it because it is a great game. Just let everyone know up front that Microsoft comes first……

Are there any PS3 boys in the world that don’t constantly bitch and moan?

I don’t mind the occasional constructive criticism; but you guys are ate up with the dumb ass, for real. You keep whining about fantasy conspiracies, complaining about the same things OVER AND OVER, or you keep asking 402 questions about shit he has answered 5 threads back.

I am not a PS3 and I still pay attention to what he says. For example; I have seen at least a dozen questions about the rumble pad since 402 indicated there were no plans to implement this in PS3.

Those of you that fit this category are VERY annoying and are a disparaging to this blog.

Why do you keep answering these meaningless comments and not replying to the valid questions being asked?

There have been alot of posts asking about why the host migration hasnt been fixed and what the plans are to correct it and all you can reply to is stupid stuff like, “Yes I agree the PS3 as a large amount of untapped power”

Come one man answer some real questions and try and get just a little respect from the PS3 users.

Hmmmmmm. At 423 am, 402 repsonds to a blog that sounds like it was written by another member of the IW staff. He responds to only one blog and that is it. 402 what about HOST MIGRATION.

Thank you I’ll take that as a compliment.

    Use your head man.

If one of the 16 or so players in a match is the host and he leaves gets disconnected or whatever; and his machine has all the game setup data, how is that data going to be transferred to another player if he is disconnected?

    @ Kroepoe -

As you said, 402 has emotions and it seems that I can get a true sense of where his loyalties lie by reading a blog instead of any “official” company website. I have emotions too and it irritated me to know that the PR man of a company admitted that he thinks the PS3 is a “turd” of a console. It’s not too far of a stretch of the imagination to assume that if IW’s PR man states this, then possibly the whole organization might feel this way, personal blog or not. And then to have 402’
